Part lovely/Part problems

As an 85 year old, I learned about grommets on the web, needing to know how to fit a new toilet seat! These were perfect, although I didn't understand how I was supposed to use the nuts and funny bit which seemed as though it should go with the screws! I ended up using the old screws which were perfect. I've still got the other bits but an explanation would have helped.
